Getting to know cannabis terminology can be hard, and if you are looking to join the industry, may be required. Here’s a short list of 15 words from beginner to expert that come up in conversations about cannabis.
Beginner
- Cannabinoid – Class of 100+ natural compounds found in cannabis plants. THC is a well known one! Other common cannabinoids are CBD, CBN, and CBG.
- THC – Natural cannabinoid found in marijuana cannabis. Responsible for the psychoactive effects.
- CBD – Natural cannabinoid found in hemp cannabis.
- Terpenes – Natural aromatic compounds contributing to cannabis aroma. Limonene is a terpene found in both cannabis and oranges.
- Hemp – Cannabis plant with high CBD and low THC levels (<0.3% Total THC). Legal in the USA by the 2018 Farm Bill.
- Marijuana – Cannabis plant with high THC and low-to-medium CBD levels.
Intermediate
- Vape – Usually refers to a 510 vape cartridge. Commonly called a “cart”
- Extract – Cannabis concentrate made by extracting cannabis flowers by chemical or mechanical means.
- Dabs – Synonymous with extract. Dabs are cannabis concentrates. A popular one is Live Resin.

Expert
- COA – Certificate of Analysis is a third party report measuring potency and contaminates in cannabis products.
- GMP – GMPs are Good Manufacturing Practices. They ensure cannabis manufacturers use high quality processes.
- Solvent – Solvents dissolve solutes. They are used in extraction, cleaning, and sometimes drinking! Ethanol, in vodka, is a great dissolving solvent for cannabinoids. It’s in alcoholic beverages and also used to make cannabis concentrates.
- Distillate – Refers to distilled cannabinoids. Distillate is a light yellow, thick oil of pure D9-THC. It’s used in vapes and edibles.
- Fresh Frozen – Immediately freezing cannabis plants after harvesting to lock in the fresh flavors.
